Electricity in South Korea: Plugs and Adapters

South Korea uses 220V electricity at 60Hz. The sockets take plugs with two round pins.

Do I need a plug adapter?

If your plug does not fit a Korean socket, you will need a plug adapter. A plug adapter changes the plug shape, not the voltage. South Korea uses Type C (Europlug) and Type F (Schuko) plugs.

Type F has metal contacts for grounding. Type C does not. If your device needs grounding, use a grounded adapter.

Do I need a voltage converter?

Check the input label on your charger or appliance to see whether you need a voltage converter:

• 100–240V, 50/60Hz: It works with Korea’s electricity supply. You only need a plug adapter if the plug does not fit.

• 110–120V only: Do not plug it directly into a Korean socket. Ask the manufacturer about a suitable voltage converter.

• 50Hz only: Check with the manufacturer before using it on Korea’s 60Hz supply. A voltage converter does not necessarily change the frequency.

Many phone, laptop, and camera chargers support 100–240V, but check yours before packing.

Take particular care with hair dryers and other high-power appliances. Follow the power limits on the device, adapter, and any converter.

If you need a voltage converter

Choose a converter that matches your device’s voltage, wattage and type. For a 110–120V-only device in Korea, look for a 220V-to-110V step-down converter.

Here are two options:

• Small electronics: The BESTEK 250W travel converter is an option for compatible low-power 110–120V devices. Follow the model’s total power limit. It excludes hair dryers, coffee makers, kettles and single-voltage curling irons or straighteners.

• Higher-power appliances: The EPICKA 2000W pure sine wave converter converts 220–240V to 110–120V and includes a Type E/F power cord. Its manual recommends no more than 1,800W for continuous use, despite the 2,000W maximum.

Check that your appliance maker allows converter use before buying. Some hair dryers prohibit it even when the wattage fits. If your device needs grounding, the converter must preserve that connection.

For a hair dryer, using one provided by your hotel or a suitable dual-voltage model can be simpler.

Where can I get a plug adapter?

Bring one with you if possible. If you forget, try:

• Your hotel: Ask at the front desk. Some hotels lend or sell adapters.

• Daiso or an electronics shop: Try Daiso, including its stores in Myeong-dong. Selection varies by store.

• Airports and convenience stores: Some shops sell travel adapters.
