South Korea’s currency is the won (₩, KRW). Common banknotes are ₩1,000, ₩5,000, ₩10,000, and ₩50,000. Commonly used coins are ₩10, ₩50, ₩100, and ₩500.
Exchanging cash
Use a bank or authorized exchange service. Compare the amount of won you will receive after fees rather than assuming that airport exchange, overseas exchange, or an ATM is always cheapest.
Keep enough local cash for your immediate needs and a backup payment method. The right amount depends on your plans. There is no universal requirement to carry US dollars.
Using ATMs
Check that the ATM accepts your card’s international network. Review the displayed fee and withdrawal limit, and check your own bank’s overseas withdrawal and currency-conversion charges. These vary by provider and card.
Check your bank’s travel settings before departure, including whether it requires a travel notification. Keep its contact details available in case a transaction is declined.
Paying by card
Major cards, including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express, are accepted at many businesses, but acceptance varies by merchant. Carry some won for places that require cash and confirm payment options before ordering or buying.
